God Remembers
Have you ever experienced a period of time when it feels like God is not speaking to you? Maybe He gave you a word or a promise a long time ago but nothing has happened about it since then? In times like these, the natural thought which comes to many of us is either that we didn’t hear God right about that thing or that God has perhaps forgotten about us or what He said.
In Genesis 17 we see God appearing to Abram after a gap of 13 years since their last recorded conversation. In that last conversation, God had made His covenant with Abram in which He promised to make him into a great nation. In the intervening time, Abram and Sarai conspired to try and kick start this process through Sarai’s servant Hagar, leading to the birth of Ishmael.
God comes to Abram to reaffirm His covenant promise. He says,
“I am El-Shaddai – God Almighty. Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.”
Genesis 17:1-2
That name God calls Himself – El-Shaddai – is translated here as God Almighty, but it is more accurate to translate it as “Sufficient One” or “The Rock.” God is clear from the outset that He is the only one who is sufficient for what Abram needs. He is the only one who can fulfil His covenant promise to Abram. Commentator Chuck Swindoll says,
“God’s commitments to Abram had never been forgotten, even though the long silence may have, at times, eke him to believe otherwise.”
Chuck Swindoll
God remembers His commitments. He remembers His promises. He remembers what He has spoken, and He will see it done.
If God has said something to you which has not yet come to pass, continue to trust in Him because He will not forget about you. He is the Sufficient One, the Rock on whom you can rely in all situations.
